Trader Joe's Salmon Burgers

What to get: A box of Trader Joe's Frozen Salmon Burgers (box of 4)
Where to get it: Trader Joe's

Why we approve: The salmon burgers have a modest amount of ingredients and they provide a very good amount of protein and calories: two patties will give you 220 calories and 30 grams of protein. Two of these patties with a small side salad are surprisingly satisfying.

Preparation: Cook the patties from frozen. Heat the pan and gently coat it with either light olive oil or expeller pressed coconut oil (tasteless). Let them cook for 7-8 minutes per side.

Variations: You can serve these with a side salad, with steamed vegetables or with a dash of Parmesan cheese. Feel free to add extra lemon pepper as these are just fish, not seasoned with anything.

Pros: These are low calorie, high protein and taste good. These are great if you are the only fish eater when everyone else is eating burgers and you don't feel like beef.

Cons: I can't see how these are better in any way than just having fish. We really don't know what natural flavor is, so while these are very easy, maybe you can opt for fish instead.

  1. Do you know if these burgers use wild or farmed salmon?

  2. I would assume farmed. All wild salmon says wild on packages.

  5. What a shame :(
TJs used to have wild salmon burgers that were made of just wild salmon and nothing else. This new junk is filled with MSG and GMO ingredients :'(

  6. These are actually wild caught salmon, with some seasonings. There's not MSG, but there really no good way to ensure that a food doesn't have anything that's GMO in it.

I encourage people who are concerned about that to minimize GMOs as much as possible, because there's no way to insure that you're 100% GMO free unless you start with 100% raw ingredients that are 100% organic.

  7. I don't see any gluten ingredients on the label and box, so I'm guessing it's pretty clean.

  8. This contains msg. Yeast extract contains msg. The label is just in disguise. Raw farm raised salmon is probably healthier than this.

  9. Yeast extract contains glutamates, which are forms of an amino acid that are found naturally in many foods. They're sometimes extracted and used as additives to prepared food. This product is commonly known as monosodium glutamate (MSG). Yeast extract contains naturally occurring glutamates, but not as much as MSG.
